Emma Grace: 10 Months

7 Feb

I’ve been pretty MIA on this blog lately because getting our house ready to sell has taken over our lives! Poor Emma has had to entertain herself many hours (with supervision of course) while we pack, clean, paint, fix and decorate.

20140127_085413 20140127_085232Finally, this week I took pity on her and we did some fun stuff – we went to the zoo on Monday and to the pool today for the first time! She really enjoyed it – but I forgot my phone so no pictures. *fail*

So Miss Emma is 10 months old today! Here’s what she’s up to:

Size

Emma is wearing almost all 12-month clothing now, though a few of her longer 9-month things still fit. She’s still wearing size 3 diapers, but I bought some 4s to see if they fit better. And that’s all I know since she doesn’t go back to the doctor until 12 months.

Eating

Emma got one new tooth this month – looking at her, it’s the one to the left of her 2 big teeth on top. It’s just a mini me! I think she might be in the process of getting a few more too, but we’ll see. We started giving her Motrin instead of Tylenol for the teething pain because our pediatrician said that Motrin lasts longer and isn’t hard on the liver like Tylenol is. We also put a little teething gel on the sore spots if she needs it. It’s not recommended due to swallowing issues, but I just nurse Emma afterward and figure if she’s fine then, she’ll be fine later.

Even though I’m not ready to wean Emma, I think I’m going to have to. After every feeding now, I offer her a bottle and she always drinks at least 4 oz. A normal feeding is 6 oz so she’s obviously not getting very much from me. And if I’m having to deal with bottles anyway, I might as well just go all in. The price and hassle won’t be that much more than it is now. But I’ve also thought about holding out because it brings her so much comfort at night – and since we’re moving soon, it might be nice to have that tool in my arsenal. Such a hard decision!

IMG_5364 (Large)Last month, I mentioned starting to give Emma more finger and table foods, which we’ve done. She’s had broccoli, taco-seasoned ground antelope, cottage cheese, pancake, quesadilla, pineapple, clementine and toast with jelly. She enjoys feeding herself but I tell ya, making her food is a lot more work than feeding purees. Emma has eaten all of the purees I made during that massive cooking day and I don’t want to make more since she’s supposed to be transitioning to table food anyway. But with everything we have going on, I finally broke down and bought a bunch of organic purees to send with Emma to daycare so that the guess work was taken out. If we’re still here when Emma is close to a year, I’ll probably ask our babysitter to feed her lunch for a little extra money.

That being said, Emma nurses/drinks a bottle 4 times a day, still nurses once at night and eats 3 meals of solid foods – usually a fruit/veggie and a protein.

IMG_5374 (Large)Sleep

Emma’s sleep has gotten back to normal since the craziness that went down over Christmas. But she still wakes up once a night, usually after sleeping 6-7 hours straight. I haven’t really tried to wean her off that since I’ve been nursing and need that feeding for my meager milk supply. If we do wean, I’ll probably try harder to get her to sleep through the night.

I’ll admit that I don’t hold out very long on Emma’s crying anymore if she’s really upset. For a while, it was because she was sick and teething and I didn’t want to make her suffer by herself. But now, it’s just because I can’t handle her screaming. That maybe is why she still cries before almost every nap and bedtime. Or maybe that’s just the way Emma is. Anyone else had experience with that?

Overall though, I can’t complain about Emma’s sleeping habits. She still wakes up between 5:30 and 6:30, takes 2 naps (after 3 hours of awake time), and goes to bed anywhere between 6 and 8 – if we try to put her to bed sooner than 3.5 hours after her last nap, she’s just wild! She won’t take a bottle and just wants to roll around. When that happens, I put her in her crib with her music projector thing and let her do her thing until she’s ready to fall asleep. Then I feed her and put her back down.

20140113_113119Development

Emma still isn’t officially crawling, but she has definitely learned how to get around with a mixture of scooting backward and rolling. Almost every time I go in and get her when she wakes up, she’s on her hands and knees. She wants to crawl so badly! She can also get from sitting to crawling, and back again.  She’s pulled herself up a couple times, but it’s definitely not a normal occurrence.

Emma has never really been content to just sit, but now she doesn’t even like being held for very long! She wants to be where she can roll around. She’s also started throwing tantrums when getting put in her carseat (though it really depends on her mood).

IMG_5371 (Large)Emma loves the music activity table we got for her at Christmas, and I enjoy it too because it has 3 language settings – English, Spanish and French. So I’ve been learning numbers and colors in French. Un, Duex, Trois, Quatre, Cing. So fun! I majored in Spanish in college, so that has been more just review for me.

Emma is starting to get the hang of drinking out of a sippy cup – though only when laying down. She still doesn’t get the concept of tipping it up to drink while sitting.

A fun thing to do with Emma is hold her in front of a mirror. She understands it’s her, so she’ll lean forward and put her nose on the mirror over and over again, to see her reflection do the same thing. It’s adorable!

Also this month, Emma got dressed up to cheer on the Broncos in the Super Bowl. We won’t talk about the actual game.

To Wean or Not to Wean

28 Jan

I honestly thought that I’d have no problem weaning Emma once she got close to a year old. I mean, think of the freedom! No longer would I have to be the one getting up at 5:30 am to feed Emma. Or staying up until she goes to bed. Or missing out on time with friends because I have to go nurse her in a different room (the nursing cover was given up on a LONG time ago). Or interrupting my work day to go pump in a room with as many as 6 other women (yes.).

I could start wearing regular bras again.

I wouldn’t have to tailor my wardrobe to what’s easiest to nurse in.

Oh and did I mention not having to pump anymore?

I’ve been thinking fairly seriously about weaning because I don’t really produce that much milk anymore. I pump twice a day at work and get 2-3 ounces each time. I’m guessing that Emma gets maybe 3-4 ounces when she nurses. I hate the thought of nursing and giving a bottle for each feeding, so I’ve just been nursing her on a 3-hour schedule still, plus 3 meals of solid foods a day. Before bedtime, I give Emma a 4-5 ounce bottle of formula, and then nurse her.

Emma seems content and is growing well, so I guess what we’re doing works. But then I think it would be so much easier and simpler to just be done with nursing. My goal was only to make it to a year anyway, because then Emma can have cow’s milk and not need expensive formula.

Faced with the actual reality of not nursing anymore, though, I realized that I’m not ready to give it up. I can’t put my finger on why but I just can’t get myself to pull the trigger. Part of it is that bottles are a lot more work – to make, clean, store, warm. Nursing is convenient. Emma has also stopped pulling off as much to look around and inspect things, so it’s less frustrating.

But I think most of it is that nursing is my bonding time with Emma. She’s never been a cuddler – these days, she barely wants to be held at all. She’s on the move! So nursing is a special thing.

Side note: The other night, Emma woke up and had a bad cough. She didn’t want to lay in my arms like usual, so I held her upright against me and she leaned her head on my chest – she hasn’t done that since she learned to hold her head up! It was 2 a.m. but I was in HEAVEN.

A day will come, though, when Emma no longer needs – or wants – to nurse. Then it will be on to the next stage in our relationship.

But that day is not today.

Emma Grace: 9 Months

7 Jan

Emma has learned a lot of new things in the past couple of weeks. Here’s what she’s up to at 9 months:

Size

Emma had her 9-month pediatrician appointment yesterday and she is now 19 lbs, 10.5 oz (74th percentile) and 28 inches long (66th percentile). She’s wearing 9- and 12-month size clothes.

I’ve been on a mission to find a pair of shoes that fit Emma’s feet and don’t constantly fall off. She has really small feet and every pair of shoes I’ve gotten her are either still too big or fall off after 5 seconds. After seeing a friend’s baby wearing them, I finally bought Emma a pair of Ministar Designs at Target. They stay on!

IMG_5307 (Large)Eating

Emma got 3 new teeth this month! The 2 middle teeth on the top and the one to the right of them.

IMG_5339 (Large)When she got her bottom teeth, she had 1 bad week of sleep and then was done. But these teeth have taken forever to come in – about 3 weeks. At the same time, Emma also had a bad cold with lots of congestion – she coughed a lot and sometimes, coughed so hard that she gagged and even threw up. Poor girl. She’s been pulling on her ears a lot too, and actually cut them up a bit with her nails, but the pediatrician said that her ears look fine. That’s good but I wish I had an explanation for why Emma still seems crabbier than normal.

I’m pretty sure Emma also went through a growth spurt recently, as she went from eating 1 container of baby food 3x a day to 2 containers for lunch and dinner. I think this means that we need to start feeding her more substantial foods, instead of just fruit and vegetable purees with some yogurt here and there. Emma has tried cheese, turkey and chicken, and likes them, but it takes forever for her to chew them. But she has gotten really good at feeding herself Cheerios and puffs so I think we’re really to start doing more finger foods.

IMG_5306 (Large)Emma has also started indicating when she wants to nurse by pulling at my shirt, leaning her head down and sometimes biting! She has only bit me while nursing once (thank goodness) but she has bitten me randomly a few times. Those little teeth are sharp!

20131220_105214

Sleep

With the teething, cold and growth spurt that Emma has been going through, plus being away from home for 2 weeks, her sleep for the past 2-3 weeks has been pretty terrible. She woke up 1-3 times per night while we were with my family for Christmas, and then 3-5 times a night when we were with Travis’ family. It was really nice having grandmas and grandpas to watch Emma in the morning while Travis and I got some more sleep.

Nursing comforts Emma in the middle of the night better and faster than anything else, so I’ve been nursing her almost every time she wakes up. I’ve probably created a monster now, so once I’m a little bit more caught up on sleep after going without it for an entire night on our drive home, I’ll start weaning Emma off her middle-of-the-night feedings again.

Other than that, sleep is pretty much what it was at 8 months.

20131215_083957Development

Talking and rolling is where I feel Emma has grown the most in the past couple of weeks. Right around 8 months, Emma started rolling over to play on her tummy all on her own, and she has continued this. She’ll even stay on her hands and knees and rock a bit, but we have to put her there. She’s rolling enough now, though, to require much more attention on our part – and faster diaper changes!

20140106_140045She also loves standing and has started to pull herself up on things. I’m pretty sure she’s been practicing this skill in the crib because every time I go in there, she’s crammed all the way in the corner, and one morning, her sleep sack was busted open. (So we are retiring the sleep sack.) At church the other day, she was standing up holding on to the couch in the nursing mothers’ room and discovered a new game – lean back, let go to stand all by yourself and mommy catches you before you fall over!

As far as talking goes, Emma loves the ‘buh’ sound. Maybe because we call her Biscuit and say “Buh-buh-buh-buh-buh-biscuit” to her all the time? She also says “ma ma ma”, “da da da”, “yah yah yah”, “blah”, and my favorite, when she’s going to bed, “aye aye aye”. It’s so freaking cute! I’ve tried to record her but she stops talking every time I get my phone out.

20140106_140107Emma loved being pushing around fast in the walker at grandma’s house. Their kitchen has an island that was perfect for cruising around. She’s a pretty good sport about most things, but if she’s not in the right mood, even things that she usually enjoys and giggles at can make her cry – like getting her neck blown on.

Emma has started to raise her arms to be picked up, and lean toward me to be held when being held by someone else.

Loves:

  • Standing
  • Grape Tylenol and Hyland’s tablets
  • Playing with kitchen utensils and small toys that have good spots for chewing
  • Being held upside down, and being held on one hand in the air (these are daddy’s tricks)
  • Spinning around in her high chair
  • Eating, especially feeding herself
  • Singing The Wheels on the Bus (we help her do the motions)

Doesn’t Like:

  • Being thrown up in the air
  • Her carseat
  • Being alone or not getting attention
  • Being licked in the face by dogs a lot
  • Getting her winter coat put on
  • Wearing things on her head

Christmas & New Years 2013

5 Jan

This year for Christmas, we road-tripped to Minnesota. It is 13 hours to my parents’ house and 16 to Travis’, but we ended up encountering snowy roads on both the way there and back, so it took us about 15.5 to get to my parents’ and 17 to get back from Travis’ parents. Brutal!

1511162_676430672387258_369919521_nSomewhere in Iowa, 5 am

20131222_075017Emma did pretty well though. We drove overnight, leaving around 6 pm on our way out and 1:30 pm on the way back. The way there, Emma fell asleep right away and slept the whole time, only waking up when we stopped for gas. I nursed her a couple of times but she was really easy until the morning. We were supposed to get to Rochester by 8 am CT, but we didn’t end up arriving until 9:30. Once Emma woke up around 7 am, she wanted out of her carseat. I did a few smiles out of her though…

20131222_093044The same thing happened on the way back, except her fussy period was on the front end. We left at her nap time, she slept for 1.5 hours, then was awake for about 3 hours, and fell back asleep around 8 pm. During her awake time, she was somewhat fussy. We stopped to eat dinner and took her out of her carseat, partly to feed her dinner and partly to give the distinction between her nap and bedtime. After she fell asleep for the night, she slept almost straight through until 5 am. She was a little fussy then too until we got home around 7 am. But I was fussy after being in the car that long, so I can’t blame her! We were very relieved to get home. I said what I always say after that trip: “I never want to do that again.”

Other than the drive, our trip to Minnesota was very enjoyable. We spent the week of Christmas with my family, since that’s when my siblings would be in town. Because of my mom’s health, our time in Rochester was very lowkey – we mostly just hung out at home, eating, playing games (Yahtzee and Rummikub), playing with Emma and my nephew Jensen, watching movies and talking.

1531680_10101193921359232_124572735_nJensen saw us putting stuff on Emma’s head as a game, and he decided it looked like fun!

1468708_10101193921194562_1566288813_nEmma did a lot better with sleep than I was expecting, considering she was teething and congested. We did have to bounce her to sleep for the majority of her naps and bedtime, but at least she wasn’t screaming like she did the last time we were in Rochester. She also slept pretty well at night, waking up only a few times and going right back to sleep after I nursed her. Even so, I’m sure that God gave me LOTS of patience. Travis and I also switched off getting up early with Emma, so that one of us could get a little more sleep.

We celebrated Christmas with my family on Christmas Eve morning, since that was the only time we’d all be together. We opened gifts first – Emma didn’t quite get the whole unwrapping thing but she liked all the toys she received! She got a cute outfit from her aunt and uncle and this alligator push toy from grandma and grandpa. I got a couple of new scarves and nail polish.

IMG_5182 (Large)After opening gifts, we ate brunch. Then my brother, his fiancee and my sister-in-law left and the rest of us hung out until it was time to go to the Christmas Eve service at 4:30. After church, we ate chili for dinner and played some Yahtzee.

IMG_5210 (Large)

On Thursday, it warmed up enough that we braved the outdoors. It was Emma’s first experience in the snow. She seemed to enjoy it overall, but was not a fan of her hand in the snow!

IMG_5214 (Large)

IMG_5222 (Large)IMG_5227 (Large)Travis also went sledding down the steps of the deck.

IMG_5216 (Large)

IMG_5218 (Large)On Friday morning, Travis and I packed up our stuff and hit the road. We had planned to leave for Emma’s first nap, but she hadn’t slept well the night before, I wanted to shower and we had a crapton of stuff to pack up. So we ended up leaving for her second nap of the day instead. It worked out well. She slept most of the 4.5 hour drive to Nevis.

Our time there was a lot more lowkey than it normally is, because it was so cold outside. It was hardly above zero the whole time we were there. The day after we arrived, though, it was 30 degrees so we took advantage of the ‘warm’ weather and took Emma sledding down the driveway.

IMG_5252 (Large) IMG_5250 (Large)Another night, Travis, Emma and I ‘went to town’ to have dinner with some friends. But other than that, Emma and I didn’t go outside at all. (Well, I did walk from one side of the house to the other when it was 20 below just to remember what it was like.)

We opened Christmas presents on Saturday night, so that Emma could play with all of her fun new toys. I’m pretty sure her toy collection doubled on this trip. She got Stack n Roll cups, a xylophone, Rock a Stack rings, a musical book, and several cute new outfits, among other small things.

IMG_5267 (Large) IMG_5266 (Large)The rest of our time we spent eating (of course), playing games (Pictionary and MarioKart on the Wii, Pub Trivia, Catch Phrase and Bananagrams), playing with all of Emma’s new toys, and doing a lot of crossword puzzles and Sudoku. We also watched some movies, though I didn’t stay up for most of the them because Emma was sleeping pretty poorly. I think she went through a growth spurt in addition to teething and the congestion. It was a doozy! Fortunately, grandma was willing to watch Emma in the mornings so that both Travis and I could sleep in until 8 or 9.

1508513_10201283314429703_1340272208_nOn Wednesday, Travis’ aunt and uncle, aunt, cousin and his girlfriend came up for New Years Day. We ate a late lunch, played some Pub Trivia, opened gifts and then they drove the 3 hours back to the Cities. We got more cute outfits and books for Emma, a calendar, office supplies and I got nice running gloves.

Emma learned how to use a walker on this trip at both houses. Can I just ask, why can’t they make a walker the right size for a 9 month old? Both walkers had to be adjusted down so that Emma could touch the ground. But we made it work and she really enjoyed standing up and moving around. She could mostly only go backward, but toward the end of our trip, she could go forward slightly too.

IMG_5296 (Large) IMG_5298 (Large)Emma also got to use a Johnny Jumpup for the first time in Nevis. She really enjoyed that too – I think, as much as a normal jumperoo. Definitely a good thing to have on vacation (or at grandma’s house).

IMG_5260 (Large)She’s also starting talking a lot more, and rolling over a ton, but I will talk more about those things in her 9-month update on Tuesday!

Emma Grace: 8 Months

7 Dec

Back when Emma was born, her first Christmas seemed like an eternity away. And here it is, in just a few weeks! Craziness.

Emma8Month 037 (Large)SIZE

Emma is getting so big! She’s wearing almost all 9-month clothes, and some 12-month. We’ve decided that she has a really long torso, because she outgrows the shirt of an outfit before the pants even fit (length-wise)! She also wears dresses in at least one size bigger than normal, otherwise her bum is hanging out all the time.

20131204_114922Her feet finally fit into shoes!

SLEEP

Emma is down to 2 naps a day. She can go 2 – 2.5 hours between naps now, and go 3.5-4 hours between her last nap and bedtime. Every once in a while, she needs 3 naps, but I try to not let that happen because then she stays up too late. It’d be ok if she slept in, but she still gets up at the same time as ever, usually between 5:30 and 6. Aye. So she and I both get less sleep than if she just went to bed earlier. Her ideal bedtime is between 6 and 7.

Emma had gotten back into the groove of sleeping at least 8 hours straight after her first teething episode, but then the past week, she started waking up 2-4 times a night again. I thought maybe she was teething but nothing’s happened there, so who knows?

20131117_073037-MIXEATING

Emma has gotten in the groove of eating 3 meals of solid foods a day. So far, they’ve all been purees but we’re going to start trying finger foods. The few times we’ve tried little hunks of cheese or Cheerios, Emma couldn’t get them to her mouth, but we’ll keep trying! Her favorite food so far is yogurt. She also likes bananas, applesauce, butternut squash and spinach mixed with banana.

She did have her first little bout of constipation this past month, but a couple days of eating pureed prunes and peaches, and she was back to normal. Man, are solid food poops messy though!

Little by little, my milk is dwindling. I think that’s one reason why Emma takes shorter naps at home than at daycare – she drinks more in a bottle at daycare than she does in a nursing session at home. Since she stays awake longer now too, I’ve started nursing her before her naps so that she’ll sleep longer.

I started pumping only twice at work, instead of 3 times, and usually get about 3-4 oz each, which is only enough for about 1 bottle. It is what it is. Emma just drinks more formula. I’ve been giving her at least 2 oz of formula before bed, in addition to nursing. One night, I nursed Emma and she fell asleep but she woke up about an hour later, and seemed hungry. I gave her a bottle and she chugged 8 oz! Girlfriend was hungry.

Emma8Month 031 (Large)DEVELOPMENT

Just in the past couple of days, Emma has started rolling over to her belly voluntarily to play with toys. And she’ll stay there for a little while before rolling back. Yay Emma! I’m glad to see that she’s no longer a tummy hater. But I’ve noticed this with a few things – if I put her on her tummy, she doesn’t like it. If she chooses to roll over, she’s fine. Little Miss Independent.

Emma still falls over quite a bit sitting up, but I think this will get better once she starts to crawl/move around on her own. She stills loves to stand up and has gotten a lot more steady on her feet. She can hold herself up on furniture briefly. We bought her this Baby Einstein activity table for Christmas so that she had something to play with while standing up. We’ve let her play with it early, since we’ll be in Minnesota for Christmas, but she’s not a huge fan. I think it might be sensory overload. Hopefully that gets better as she gets older. We also bought her this shape sorter for Christmas, which we’ll bring to MN with us.

Emma8Month 026 (Large)Emma has started giggling a lot more this past month – she’ll giggle at a bunch of stuff that you wouldn’t even think was funny. Like the knife set on our counter. Our Christmas tree. The bunny on the shelf in her room. The dogs. A squeezy spoon. (Seriously, watch that video – it’s so funny!) And she’s still squawking and smiling up a storm – she is almost always making noise. She’s such a happy little girl.

The best way to describe her favorite noise to make right now, though, is gurgling. She does it in the back of her throat. It’s so cute. But a little difficult to do while eating.

Emma8Month 034 (Large)Emma likes to flap her arms up and down, and when laying down, she slams her feet on the ground. (It’s hard to describe baby movements, but those of you with babies probably know what I’m talking about!) She also gets so excited when I pick her up that she does a little jumping motion in my arms.

I think Emma might be starting to develop some attachment issues because she hardly ever lets anyone else hold her, especially if I’m in the room. She’d rather be sitting next to me than being held by someone else, and has started reaching for me if someone else is holding her. But she is still doing great at daycare and still likes Daddy, so that’s good!

20131204_075349I mentioned this in a previous post, but we’ve started swapping date nights with some friends whose daughter is about 3 weeks younger than Emma. Emma has enjoyed it so much! It’s been so cute to watch Emma look at her friend, reach out to touch her, and try to interact with her. Emma also loves my friend’s 4-year-old boy at daycare – apparently, he cracks her up all the time!

Emma8Month-candycane

Emma is such a joy! I am blessed to be her mother.

A Day in the Life {At Work}

18 Nov

Before I went back to work, I looked online for examples of what working mothers’  schedules looked like. How did they handle dinner? When was bedtime? How did they get stuff ready for the next day? After scouring the interwebs, I didn’t really find any examples of workday schedules. So I thought it would be interesting, and hopefully helpful to some, to write a “Day in the Life” post about a typical day in the life of a working mom (and a 7-month old).

I also wanted to mention that at first, going back to work and figuring out what to do when and how was very overwhelming (I seriously made about 15 different schedules trying to ‘nail it down’). But after a week or 2, we fell into our own rhythm and it works pretty well. Mornings when Travis isn’t home are definitely more hectic but we manage. Anyway… here was our day last Thursday.

3:00 am – Emma’s crying. She sounds pretty upset. I find her on her belly in her crib. Since she usually wakes up to nurse about this time, I nurse her and put her back down after bouncing her a little.

5:50 – Emma’s crying again. Usually when she wakes up for the day, she’s happy and just coos in her crib for a while. Not today. I find her on her belly again! Silly girl. It’s like she forgets that she knows how to roll over. I change her diaper, clean out her stuffy nose with saline drops and a bulb syringe, and nurse her.

6:15 – Emma plays on her playmat while I let the dogs out, feed them and brew a cup of coffee. I turn on the news and play with Emma while I drink my coffee. Ahh…

6:35 – I give Travis his 10-minute warning (he was up late playing hockey) and feed Emma mango for breakfast.

6:45 – I put Emma in bed with Travis while I jump in the shower. Then I do my hair, makeup and get dressed while Emma jumps in her jumperoo.

7:10 – While Travis dresses Emma, I make my lunch, get the bottles and diaper bag ready, make another cup of coffee and 2 pieces of peanut butter toast, and load my car with the following: purse, breast pump, pumping cooler, Emma’s bottle cooler, diaper bag, lunch bag, water bottle, peanut butter toast and coffee mug. So much stuff!

20131114_174059Travis was going to pair magenta pants with this shirt… I will never understand what goes through his mind regarding color combinations.

7:30 – We’re out of the door on time! I eat my toast in the car as we drive to daycare.

7:53 – Arrive at Charlotte’s house. We chat for a bit and then I drive to work.

8:28 – Arrive at work.

9:50 – First pumping session. I get 5 oz!

10:30 – Back at my desk for snack time!

20131114_10322311:30 – I’m still hungry so I eat lunch.

20131114_11285812:45 – Second pumping session. Only 3 oz this time.

1:10 – Back at my desk.

1:50 – Snack time again! I am a bottomless pit today.

20131114_1352042:40 – I’m yawning so I go get a peppermint mocha from our on-campus coffee shop with a co-worker.

3:30 – Third (and final) pumping session. I get 3 oz.

4:30 – Leave work to go pick up Emma. I’m done for the week! (Usually I leave at 5, but today I need to pick Emma up early.) On the way to my car, I run into a co-worker who had a baby 3 weeks after me but then moved to our Seattle office. We catch up for 10 minutes.

5:05 – Pick Emma up from Charlotte’s. She had a good day at daycare, with one fussy period, and has been awake since 4:00.

5:30 – Get home. Emma has a poopy diaper, so I change it and feed her pureed spinach/banana for dinner. It’s the first time she’s tried it and she really likes it! Then while Travis watches Emma, I make dinner for us – homemade macaroni and cheese with mixed veggies. It’s the best I could do – I need to go grocery shopping tomorrow. (Often, Travis makes dinner while I feed Emma.)

20131114_1824396:30 – Bath time! We read Emma some of Little House in the Big Woods while she splashes. Then we put on her diaper, lotion and jammies, sing a song and pray.

6:50 – I nurse Emma.

7:15 – Emma’s asleep! I’m glad that she went down easy instead of being wide awake for another 30 minutes. I drink a couple glasses of wine while Travis and I watch Breaking Bad and hang out.

9:20 – Bedtime!

11:30 – Emma’s awake. Ugh. Apparently she traded going down easy with being awake for 2.5 hours in the middle of the night. After nursing, letting her play in her crib, bouncing, rocking and everything else, I’m at the end of my rope. We let her cry for a bit until she gets really upset and then Travis goes in to get her back to sleep. It takes him about 30 minutes.

And that’s a wrap!

A Day in the Life {At Home}

10 Nov

This day turned out to be rather atypical for Emma in terms of naps/sleep, and Travis was gone on a work trip, but otherwise, it was a pretty typical Friday for us.

4:30 am – I hear Emma on the monitor. I give her a chance to fall back asleep on her own.

4:45 – Emma’s still awake, so I get up and nurse her.

5:10 – I put Emma back down after a little bouncing, crossing my fingers she stays asleep (at that hour, it’s always a crapshoot.)

5:15 – Emma’s awake. Darn. She’s still tired though, so I hold her until she really wakes up.

6:10 – She’s awake for the day. I change her diaper and put her on her playmat, while I let the dogs out, feed them and brew myself a cup of coffee. I drink my coffee and watch the news while Emma plays. I also put a stack of cloth diapers away.

20131108_0629286:50 – Attempt to nurse Emma but she’s not really interested. So I feed her some peach yogurt instead, while I eat oatmeal with peanut butter and brown sugar (my favorite way to eat oatmeal right now). After breakfast, Emma bounces in her jumperoo while I do dishes.

7:35 – Tummy time on Mommy! And Super Baby time – where I hold her like Superman. It’s a way to strength her core muscles that she actually likes, for a few minutes. Then we just play sitting up until it’s time for her next nap.

8:20 – Emma’s starting to fuss, so I put her in her sleepsack and down in her crib for a nap. She whimpers a little bit, but goes to sleep on her own. I brew my second cup of coffee and drink it while I spend some time praying. I spend 15 minutes on downloading pictures to add to Emma’s 12-month picture frame  (similar to this one).

9:45 – Emma’s awake. I change her diaper and nurse her.

10:00 – I change into running clothes, load Emma, the dogs and the stroller into the car, and drive to a park for a 2-mile run.

20131108_10421710:45 – We’re done! 2 miles in 22:50. When we get home, I change Emma’s clothes and take her 7-month pictures. Then I change her into a practical outfit and make a turkey sandwich before calling my friend, Amy, who lives in Hawaii to chat.

11:45 – Emma’s down for a nap, but not happy about it.

12:00 pm – I end my call with Amy because Emma’s still screaming. I go in to bounce/rock her but she keeps crying, so I decide to try nursing her. Her last nursing session was pretty quick. I change out of my sports bras and nurse her. It helps calm her down.

12:15 – Emma’s asleep. I take a shower and dry my hair most of the way. I also spend about 30 seconds doing my makeup. I work on Emma’s 7-month blog update a bit.

12:45 – Emma’s awake. I try to get her back to sleep but she’s wide awake so I change her diaper and feed her lunch. I try to give her avocado thinned with formula but she makes a face and refuses to eat it (she really does not like things combined with formula!), so I break out some food I got from a co-worker. I guessed it was sweet potato puree but after a few bites, I notice printing on the side that says “Mac cheese”. Interesting… Emma eats about half. I take a little bite and it’s not too bad, but not great either.

1:10 – Emma plays with toys while I eat a yogurt and banana, and make a grocery list.

1:30 – We head to Target.

20131108_135417I am in love with this wreath, and plan to try making it myself for cheaper.

2:15 – Emma bounces in her jumperoo while I put groceries away. She’s so happy that I sit next to her and look at photo albums. Then we play on the floor some more.

2:45 – Put Emma down for a nap. Again, she cries so I go in and nurse her. Something definitely seems to be off with her. Usually I can calm her down by just holding her, but today, she seems out of sorts. I give her some Tylenol just in case she’s in pain.

3:15 – Emma’s asleep.

3:30 – Emma’s awake. I try to get her back to sleep again so I could just hold her for her nap, but she’s awake. So I make an egg sandwich, grab an apple and we go for a drive up Clear Creek Canyon (beautiful!) to get Emma to sleep. It works! I also listen to Tim Keller’s sermon ‘Blessed Self-Forgetfulness‘, which gets better every time I listen to it.

5:15 – After sitting in the driveway for 15 minutes finishing Emma’s 7-month update, I take Emma inside. She stays sleeping and I put her in the nursery while I make dinner. I knew letting her sleep could either be a good idea or could backfire but I decided to risk it.

5:45 – Emma’s awake. I feed her pureed blueberries for dinner. They are messy!

6:15 – Bathtime! Followed by Emma’s nighttime routine.

7:15 – Emma is still wide awake. I think we can say the long nap before bed backfired. I sit next to Emma playing in her crib while I read blogs on my phone in the dark.

7:45 – Emma has a poopy diaper, so I change it and then try to bounce her a bit. She still seems uncomfortable/in pain, so I give her some more Tylenol.

8:00 – Emma’s finally asleep, albeit lightly, so I rock her while watching How I Met Your Mother on my phone.

8:30 – Emma wakes up crying and wriggling while I’m holding her, and I’m at a loss for what’s wrong, so I put some Orajel on her top and bottom gums. Maybe she’s getting more teeth? It seems to calm her down at any rate. I hold her for another episode.

8:50 – I finally put Emma down. Travis should be home in the next 30 minutes, but I’m exhausted so I eat a bowl of cereal, wash my face, brush my teeth and go to bed. I watch another episode of HIMYM (I’m obsessed!) before turning the lights out. Travis gets home right as I’m done watching, so I talk to him for a few minutes before going to sleep.

9:30 – Sleep!

Emma woke up 3 times that night, at around 12:30, 2:45 and 4:45, and didn’t go back to sleep after that last wakening (at least, according to how my sleep-deprived brain remembers it!). I fed her each time, because when she’s so uncomfortable, it’s the only thing that settles her down enough to fall back asleep. During the second nursing, I spaced out and when I opened my eyes again, I panicked because I thought Emma was upside down (with her butt above her head). It took me a good 20 seconds to realize that I was looking at the wrong end. Oy. I really hope this passes quickly!

Emma Grace: 7 Months

8 Nov

For some reason, 7 months sounds so old! It’s kind of hard to believe that 7 months have already passed since Emma was born. I’ve been saying this is Emma’s mini golden birthday, because she’s 7 months on the 7th. 😉

Emma7Month 037 (Large)Here’s what Emma is up to:

SIZE

Emma doesn’t have another pediatrician appointment until 9 months, so I’m not sure what her weight and height are now. But she keeps growing! She has almost grown out of all her 6 month sleepers – the 9 month ones are still pretty big on her though, so she’s stuck between sizes. She got a few new Oshgosh B’Gosh dresses this past month and they run small so they’re 12 month size. And she’s still wearing size 3 diapers. But she did go up a snap on her cloth diapers!

Her feet are finally big enough for her 3-6 month shoes, but she loves to kick her heels against whatever she’s sitting in or laying on, so the shoes (and socks) last about a minute before they’re off.

SLEEP

Emma has officially dropped her 4th nap, and sometimes only takes 2 longer naps a day. Most days though, she takes 3. She’s up for the day around 6:00, takes naps around 8:00, 11:00, and 3:00, and goes to bed around 6:30/7:00. For me at least, she is not consistent with how long her naps are, but they are usually between 45 and 90 minutes.

Emma’s sleep got disrupted quite a bit when we went up to elk camp, and then she got two teeth!

Emma7Month 032 (Large)She was up a lot during the night then too, poor baby. We could tell that she was in pain. But thankfully, we all got through that with some Baby Orajel and baby acetaminophen, and now Emma is sleeping 8-10 hours straight again, as long as she gets a full belly before going to bed. (If she doesn’t, she wakes up after about 6 hours to eat.)

EATING

I’m still mostly breastfeeding, though I do supplement with formula for a feeding here and there if Emma wants a bottle before bed, or if I didn’t pump enough during the previous workday. I fed Emma a lot during the night when she was teething and that helped my supply out a ton! But now that she’s sleeping better at night, my supply has gone back to normal.

Emma’s eating routine is a bit different on the days I work than the days I’m home. But generally speaking, she nurses 4-5 times a day (she drinks 2 bottles of 6 oz each at daycare, sometimes 3), and then eats 2-3 meals of solid foods. For breakfast, she eats fruit or oatmeal cereal. Dinner is usually a vegetable. And lunch is whatever she didn’t have at another meal, like yogurt. I try to give her 1 fruit, 1 vegetable and 1 grain or protein a day. Seems like a good balance. If only I ate that healthy!

20131027_072836I haven’t made much of her baby food lately, mostly because I have been busy with other stuff on the days I don’t work. But pre-made baby food is expensive and not as healthy as real food, so I’m planning to take a few hours this coming weekend and made a lot of food at once to freeze.

I can tell that Emma prefers to eat solid foods over nursing – she has to be coaxed to nurse most of the time (she’d rather just look around at what’s going on, even when we’re alone in a dark room with no noise!). But when I put her in her high chair, she gets all excited, kicks her little legs around and eagerly awaits her first bite.

At first she only ate about half a yogurt, or a couple ounces of vegetables, for a feeding but now she eats the whole thing! When eating, she loves to kick her legs against the chair pad and crumple up her bib into her mouth between bites. She also loves it when we ‘airplane’ the bites to her but then she’s smiling so much that it’s hard for her to keep the food in her mouth. Silly girl. Here’s a video of it.

Other foods she’s tried since her 6-month update: Broccoli, lentils, yogurt (peach & strawberry), eggs, mandarin oranges, red pepper hummus and several flavors of store-bought baby food, like banana + mango, green beans, and sweet potato + carrot (that one was completely disgusting, but Emma ate it up!). Emma was not a fan of the broccoli, eggs or hummus. The hummus definitely got the best ‘ewww’ face from her so far. (I got the idea for trying that from this BabyCenter article.)

{Sidenote: We ended up buying the Chicco Polly SE high chair after looking at the BabyTrend Standard high chair and the Graco DuoDiner high chair at Target. We liked the vinyl material of the chair cushion, the big tray that latches on both sides so that babies can’t remove it themselves, the height and recline settings, the easy but effective 5-point harness, and the wheels on each leg. Emma is still pretty small for it, and can’t feed herself yet, so we just use it without the tray right now.}

20131031_070407Her shirt said ‘Don’t scare me. I poop easily.’

DEVELOPMENT

Emma has been a pro at rolling over from her belly to her back for several months now, and can totally roll over from her back to belly (we’ve found her like that in her crib 3 mornings) but overall, she still doesn’t have any interest in being on her belly. She might be one of those babies that never crawls, who knows? So needless to say, she’s not really mobile in any sense yet. Though she has accidentally made her playmat collapse on her by pushing against the supports!

Emma loves sitting up playing with toys and does a great job until she tries to reach for something a little too far away, and then over she goes. And she goes down fast! So we set up pillows around her, even though we’re sitting there watching her, so that she doesn’t bump her head on the ground. (But sadly, she has still done that several times.)

20131101_094152She also loves standing, and can stand up briefly on her own by holding onto furniture. She can’t get herself up to standing, but she can stay there for a bit! I always get a kick out of her standing – she looks so small, and so big, all at the same time!

20131108_064303 20131108_064237

Emma continues to like the dogs – and now when she sees them, she’ll smile and squeal a little. They still don’t really like to be petted by her, but little do they know what’s coming…

A few funny things that Emma does: She likes to rake things with her fingernails – the chair, high chair, blankets, my stomach (ow!). Maybe she’s reminding me that I need to cut her nails more often? She also plays with my hair a lot while nursing. She’ll grab a fistful and stretch her arm back, pulling on my hair (which hurts a bit sometimes). Then she’ll let it go, wait a bit, grab another fistful and repeat. I let her do it because I think it’s funny, but I’ve drawn the line at her grabbing handfuls of my face.

One day this past month, Emma was playing with a small plastic hanger and when I took it away, she cried. I thought to myself, “And so it begins!” I can’t believe we’re getting to the point of having to discipline and teach Emma about limits, manners and all that stuff! It definitely adds another dimension to being a parent.

Emma has been to the church nursery every Sunday since she turned 6 months, but I always get called back early, since she usually naps at 11 – which is right in the middle of the service – and when she gets tired, she wants Mommy. Still, I’ve been able to hear most of the sermons so it’s been nice.

She’s also been to the gym daycare once. That also went well. I nursed her before taking her and worked out for an hour. I was called back early there too, because she had a poopy diaper (and the daycare doesn’t do diaper changes or feedings, which is understandable). But I got a great run in around the track! I felt AWESOME both physically and mentally and the first 1.3 miles, I just ran as fast as I could while listening to Mumford & Sons, Passion Pit, and The Temper Trap. Turns out ‘as fast as I can’ is a 10:00 mile! My 2nd mile was quite a bit slower… 12:00. But hey, I finished with a huge runner’s high. It’s times like that remind me, exercise makes me happy. I need to make that kind of time for myself. It makes me a better wife and mom.

20131107_071853Anyway, each month that passes, I feel more and more  like I’m getting the hang of this motherhood thing. Most importantly, my love for Emma grows. No matter what time she wakes up, when I go in and she’s smiling and cooing at me, I can’t help but love her. I can’t wait to pick her up from daycare, and spend several minutes just hugging and kissing her. She is so precious, and such a blessing. I am so thankful to God for her being in our lives, and for me being able to really, truly enjoy her.

Emma7Month 047 (Large)Emma makes that face often.

Emma7Month 054 (Large)I don’t think I blogged about this yet, but we took Emma to a corn maze a few weeks back – it was a pretty sad corn maze compared to the ones in Minnesota. The corn was all dead and only about 3 feet tall, so you could see everyone and all the different paths. It was fun anyway though. Oh and we ate a funnel cake while we were there. So. delicious. (Unfortunately, Emma did not partake.)

6 Months Postpartum

10 Oct

I feel like 6 months postpartum deserves an update. So here’s how things are going:

Physical Recovery

Taking into account the fact that I am a lot less active now than I was pre-pregnancy, I feel like I can say that I am more or less back to normal. Update on a few weird side effects of pregnancy that I haven’t talked about before (because I forgot to!):

  • My arms used to go numb really easily, but that has gone away.
  • My knees used to really hurt whenever I squatted/sat down, but I realized this was from squatting/lunging weird while holding a baby upright. I’m trying to lunge/squat properly now.
  • I couldn’t lay on my left side without my stomach hurting. This has gotten better, though it hasn’t completely disappeared.
  • I still have the linea negra, but it’s fading slowly.

My face acne has gotten a lot better, and I’m guessing that the difference now from pre-pregnancy is that I’m no longer on a birth control pill that contains estrogen. Boo on acne at age 30!

I’ve been sleeping enough hours at night for long enough now that I feel like a normal human being almost always, so that has been nice. I still LOVE when it’s time for bed though! If it weren’t for my current obsession with How I Met Your Mother on Netflix, I would go to bed at the same time Emma does.

Body Weight / Image

3and6monthspostpartum

I got on the scale yesterday morning and surprisingly, it read only about 1.5 lbs above my pre-pregnancy weight. But when I got pregnant, I was in marathon shape. I was muscular. So it’s not really comparing apples and apples to say I’m back to that weight. But it’s something! And I can fit into more and more of my pre-pregnancy clothes as the months go by. I have realized, though, that a lot of my shirts from then were short-ish and tight, so I’m not sure if I’ll ever wear them again. Some shirts and dresses still don’t fit over the milk-makers. I now buy shirts in size Large. It doesn’t bother me, but it just wasn’t something I expected. I did expect my feet to grow, but they didn’t. I’m still the same size there (which I appreciate because I hate shoe shopping!).

In my 12 Weeks Postpartum post, I talked about wanting to eat better. Hmm… that has gotten slightly better, though it still definitely needs improvement. Before I got pregnant, I was good about balance. If I wanted a glass of wine, I’d skip the chocolate. If we were eating out for dinner, I’d have a healthy lunch. But ever since pregnancy gave me (almost) free rein, I let myself have wine, chocolate AND a big dinner. It’s so hard to say no! (And yes, breastfeeding does give me a LITTLE more leeway than normal but not that much!)

I haven’t gotten back into exercise as much as I had been hoping to, but now that Emma can go to the gym childcare, I’m excited to start going to classes and stuff again! I miss feeling active and fit. The whole moving to Minnesota thing has kind of thrown my plans for a half marathon up into the air, but I’m going to start training in November anyway. I need a goal. I think I’ll try to do a 10K in December too.

But overall, in regards to body weight and image, I really feel very comfortable with where I’m at right now. I mean, as long as I don’t have to wear a bikini ever again anytime soon.

Emotional

I’ll admit that it took me a LONG time to adjust to being a mom. I had a hard time giving up my freedom and rest – not being able to run errands when I wanted, train for races, veg on the couch at night, go on trips we’ve always talked about, cook dinner, read a book, spend time with hubby alone or sleep a full 8 hours. Slowly, I have found ways to still include these things in my life. I can plan meals during her nap. I do laundry while she bounces in her jumperoo. We run errands together when Emma is awake. (Again I say, things have gotten so much easier as Emma has gotten older! I couldn’t put her down for the first 2 months of her life due to her feeding issues.)

But still, some days, Emma demands it all. I don’t have either the time or energy to get everything done. So I’ve learned PRIORITIES. I choose 2-3 things that need to get done and stick to those. This past Monday, it was 1) Take Emma to her 6-month appointment 2) Take Emma’s 6-month pictures and 3) Bring dinner to our friends who just had a baby. I was able to get all of that done on Monday, but some days, even that doesn’t happen. My post about learning to let things go has been a great reminder to me about trusting God with my to-do list. He’s got it under control, so I don’t have to.

I loved Emma since the moment she was born, but having a new baby was so challenging that I didn’t feel love for her a lot of the time. In the past month or so, though, God has graciously made my heart overflow with love for Emma. It’s now a treat when I can rock her to sleep, and just stare at her little face. I love hugging her, kissing her face, and listening to her coo and shriek in her own little way. I look forward to picking her up after being at work all day. (Though nights without Travis home still intimidate me.)

Our trip to Minnesota a couple weeks ago reminded me of how hard those first 2 months were. No wonder I felt so overwhelmed and discouraged! Having a baby who cries a lot and refuses to be put down is HARD. It’s hard to enjoy your baby and new role as a mom in the midst of that. And that’s where I was until Emma was about 5 months.

I’m finally at a place where I enjoy being a mom (most days). I’m still looking forward to being able to do more things with Emma, like go to the playground, museum, library, movies, etc. but she’s learning and engaging with new things everyday, which is fun. I have also really enjoyed being back at work part-time. It does make life a little bit crazier, but it helps me really enjoy the days I am at home with Emma.

Emma Grace: 6 Months

7 Oct

Emma is 6 months old today! This is a big milestone, not only because it’s half a year, but because Emma is now old enough to go to the gym daycare and children’s ministry at our church! I am excited to workout more and go to a whole church service. I checked her into the children’s ministry yesterday, even though I knew she might have a meltdown. She did, but I at least I got to hear almost the whole sermon before having to go get her!

Emma6Month 024 (Large)

SIZE

At her 6-month appointment this morning, Emma weighed 16 lbs, 6 oz (54%). She was 26 inches tall (54%) and her head circumference was 16.73 inches (58%). Still growing well!

Emma is wearing mostly 3-6 or 6 month clothes, but some of her 3 month clothes still fit too (Carter’s runs really long!). She’s wearing size 3 diapers. Weirdly, Emma’s feet haven’t grown hardly at all since birth – I compared her feet now to her footprints from birth and they’re only like 1/2 inch longer! She has 2 pairs of shoes that say they’re for 3-6 months and they are still about 2 inches too long on her. Our pediatrician says that feet don’t grow linearly, so she might have abnormally small right feet, but they’ll eventually catch up. She’s just focusing her growth on other areas. Like her cheeks.

Emma-cart-scared

She wasn’t sure what to think about riding in the shopping cart.

SLEEP

Emma still takes 3-4 naps a day, which range from 40 minutes to 2.5 hours (though those long naps aren’t very common). She stays awake between her naps for about 2 – 3 hours.

At night, Emma sleeps for about 10 hours total. She went through a stretch of sleeping 10 hours straight but for the past 3-4 weeks, she’s only slept about 4-8 hours in a single stretch. I think it might be because she gets hungry in the middle of the night, so we’re going to try giving her a bottle before bed to see if that helps. We’re also going to try to cut out her 4th nap (but sometimes she falls asleep in the car on the way home from daycare).

Emma6Month 011 (Large)

EATING

I’m still breastfeeding Emma about 6 times a day, roughly every 3 hours, for about 15 minutes. She’s gotten very distractible and doesn’t have the patience to spend a long time nursing anymore.

I estimate that she drinks 4-6 oz when she nurses (depending on time of day). I had been giving her only three 4 oz bottles while I’m at work but I’m going to start bumping that up to 5 or 6 oz, because she seems to be hungrier in the past week or so. Unfortunately, this means we’re going to have to start supplementing with formula because I can usually only pump 3 – 4 oz, 5 if I’m lucky. I haven’t done *absolutely everything* I can to keep breastfeeding, but honestly, I don’t have the energy or desire to bend over backwards to keep it going. I am going to try a few other supplements though (like Mother’s Milk and fenugreek), just in case they help. And I will keep breastfeeding Emma as much as I can.

About 3 weeks ago, we started solids. So far, Emma loves eating and has done really well. She’s a natural! She has tried (in order) avocado, banana, applesauce, oatmeal cereal with cinnamon, sweet potatoes and peas. She usually gets a meal in the morning and evening, though we are definitely not consistent yet.

emma-eating

She didn’t make any funny faces except with the sweet potatoes – but I think that may have been because I took them out of a soup I made and she may have gotten some onion with it. Next up, we’re going to try apples, carrots and lentils. We’ve been feeding her in her Bumbo seat so far, but we are planning to buy a high chair soon. Any recommendations?

PERSONALITY

Emma likes being around people. She’ll be content in her jumperoo, swing or on her playmat if you sit next to her and watch, but if you get up to go do something, she gets frustrated pretty fast!

She loves to smile. Sometimes, she’ll smile at someone she doesn’t know and then turn and bury her head in our shoulder, like she’s shy.

emma-smiling-with-daddy

She talks a LOT. She coos, sighs, shrieks, and giggles. It’s really cute but when she gets really loud, it’s hard to hear anything else! She also laughs a lot at funny noises.

LIKES & DISLIKES

Emma has no interest in things she can’t put in her mouth. Everything you hand her, she looks at for about 10 seconds and into her mouth it goes. She still loves to suck on her hands and toes, but now that she can hold toys so well, she likes to suck on those a bunch too.

20130928_144245-MIX

I’ve tried playing easy iPad games or reading books with her – after a minute or 2, she says it’s time to move on to the next thing. The only way I can get her to listen to a story is if she’s doing something else she enjoys.

Speaking of which, her favorite thing to do by far is lay on her back and suck on toys. She’ll put her little legs up and roll over from side to side, but never rolls on to her belly – I think because she still doesn’t like being on her tummy! When we put her on her stomach, she immediately rolls over. To get some tummy time in, we lay down and put her on our chest, but even then, she wants to roll off after just a couple minutes! (Which is fun game to play on the bed, BTW).

We just recently bought Emma a Rainforest Jumperoo for $40 on Craigslist (before, we had a Bounce Bounce Baby which was really hard for her to bounce on) and SHE LOVES IT! It’s funny too, because she’ll keep bouncing even after she gets tired, so she starts looking (and sounding) upset but keeps bouncing anyway.

emma-jumperoo

She still likes her swing and playmat, but the Bumbo seat has lost its appeal for playing – though we’re still using it for feeding her, as I mentioned before. Emma can sit up on her own for 5-10 seconds before tipping over.

Emma loves to grab things (like hair and faces – OUCH!), and doesn’t mind getting dirty. She and I were soaking up the warm weather two weekends ago and she was so excited about pulling out clumps of grass and dirt – and trying to eat them! I kept telling her “Yucky” but she still snuck some in her mouth. That love of grass and dirt is from her daddy, not me!

20130930_155033

20130930_155059

20130930_155036

Emma really only cries about 2 things: 1) being overtired and 2) getting a shirt put on. When she’s hungry, she just whines a little bit, but put a shirt over her head and the world is coming to an end. And watch out if you combine the two and put a shirt on her when she’s tired!

Other random facts about Emma:

  • Still loves baths.
  • No teeth yet.
  • Doesn’t mind getting her nails cut.
  • Had her first stuffy nose.
  • Loves being outdoors.
